Top Tips - where to start and some priorities
Human Resources (HR) is NOT about being "pink and fluffy". HR is about a practical approach to managing people that supports the organisation and helps you achieve your business objectives.
Your employees are one of your greatest assets. You cannot run or build a business without good people. However, employing people also brings with it a great deal of regulation (employment law and employment rights) and therefore potential liability. There are numerous legal requirements to comply with and it can be difficult to know where to start and exactly what you need to do. And just to add to this - employment law is always changing!
The majority of small to medium sized enterprises (SME's) will not have (and cannot justify having) a qualified and/or experienced HR professional working full or part-time in the business. However, this does not mean that SME's do not do ‘HR' - it simply means that someone is given this 'role' in addition to their ‘proper job'. This may be the Finance or Office Manager, PA/secretary, or the Business Owner. In addition anyone who has responsibility for people will do 'HR' as they need to manage their people.
But the lack of in-house expertise makes SME's more vulnerable as they can, unknowingly, fall foul of regulations or legislation and find themselves in all sorts of trouble before they know it!
This site aims to help SME's and help you put in place the basics needed to meet legal requirements and ensure you have appropriate HR documentation and processes. You should start by reading the Summary page as this will give a brief overview of all of the areas covered by this site and provide links to the key topics.
You should also visit the HR & Football page that will provide a simple analogy that will help explain why HR is important to any business. Finally, please remember... there is more help available should you need it. Our range of services and products can be seen on the Products and Services Page.
